How each compares with AREDS2
AREDS2 is the largest clinical trial in this category. It tested a specific combination: vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, copper, lutein and zeaxanthin, at set doses, in people with intermediate age-related macular degeneration. It also found more lung cancers in the group taking beta-carotene, mostly former smokers, which is why lutein and zeaxanthin replaced it.
VisiFlora covers five of those six nutrients. Its gaps are a zinc dose far below the 80 mg that was tested, and the beta-carotene it still contains.
VISIVRA covers three: lutein, zeaxanthin and zinc. It’s missing vitamin C, vitamin E and copper, and publishes no doses.
In AREDS2, lung cancers were more common in the beta-carotene group (2.0% vs. 0.9%), mostly in former smokers. The researchers concluded lutein and zeaxanthin could be an appropriate substitute.

Where each one wins
VisiFlora wins on
- Coverage: five of the six AREDS2 nutrients, versus three
- Transparency: it publishes its zinc dose; VISIVRA publishes none
- Price: $59 a bottle in the 3-pack (vs. $69) and free US shipping on the 6-pack
VISIVRA wins on
- Simplicity: six ingredients instead of about twenty, which makes it easier for you and your doctor to check for interactions
- Focus: it’s built around lutein and zeaxanthin, which in a one-year trial improved contrast and recovery from glare
- Beta-carotene: VisiFlora definitely contains it; VISIVRA’s vitamin A source isn’t stated, so it may not (confirm with the seller)

Which one should you choose?
- You’ve never smoked and want the broadest coverage: VisiFlora.
- You smoke or used to: skip VisiFlora because of its beta-carotene. Consider VISIVRA only after the seller confirms its vitamin A doesn’t come from beta-carotene.
- Your main concern is comfort with screens and bright light: VISIVRA’s lutein and zeaxanthin focus fits that best.
- You take several medications: VISIVRA’s shorter list is easier to check, but show either label to your pharmacist.
- You’ve been diagnosed with intermediate AMD: neither. Ask your eye doctor about a formula matching the AREDS2 doses.

The bottom line
If you’ve never smoked and want the most complete formula of the two, VisiFlora is the stronger pick. If you want a simple lutein and zeaxanthin supplement, or you want to avoid beta-carotene (after confirming VISIVRA’s vitamin A source), VISIVRA is the lighter option. Both come with a 60-day guarantee, and neither replaces an AREDS2 formula if you have diagnosed AMD.
